ITA Airways plans to induct 39 new aircraft into its fleet next year, while phasing out older models.

The Italian airline will welcome the new planes, which includes nine Airbus A330 widebodies, as it aims to expand its service across the Mediterranean region.

Italy's flag carrier is planning to add 39 new planes over the next decade, some of which will go towards replacing its ageing aircraft.

During this time, the airline will induct nine widebodies and 30 narrowbodies, including the Airbus A330-900 and the Airbus A321neo.

After ITA inducts all 39 new-generation aircraft, the carrier says it will boast a total fleet size of 96 aircraft by the end of 2023.

The Italian airline currently has 66 aircraft - four new A220s, 17 Airbus A319s, 31 Airbus A320s, eight Airbus A330s and six Airbus A350s.

ITA plans to add several attractive long-haul destinations to its network in the coming years, including San Francisco, Washington and Rio de Janiero.

ITA is also plotting a Middle Eastern expansion with three destinations on the cards, with Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait City.
